Buzz Lightyear costumes are always popular.  The character Buzz Lightyear first came out in the 1995 computer-animated film Toy Story, and has also appeared in Toy Story 2 in 1999.  Not particularly surprising, since he is one of the two main protagonists of the franchise.  The plot revolves around a group of toys owned by a kid named Andy.  These toys come to life when their owner is not around, giving them individual personalities.  This theme has become a bit more common since the release of the first movie, with normally inanimate objects being personified in the media, proving the originality of the movie franchise.

The character upon which the costumes are based, Buzz Lightyear, is a space ranger and a ranking official at that.  He is best known for his courage and bravado, yet he has a glaring character flaw – he can be unemotional at times.  He is proficient in several martial arts, and his space-suit has a lot of high-tech features that include flight, protection against ballistics and impact, as well as communication features such as radio and universal translation.  And that is just scratching the surface.  He spends quite a large part of the first movie believing himself to be a real space ranger and not a toy based on one, the realization of which was integral to the plot of the movie.

What makes the character, and consequently the costume, appeal to people both young and young-at-heart?  Well, Buzz Lightyear is an all-around nice guy, and his high-tech suit is just way cool.  The popularity of the costumes reached its peaks soon after the first and second movie, and considering the upcoming scheduled release of Toy Story 3 in 2010, its popularity is sure to rise again.  Even kids who have not watched the original movie or the sequel think that the costume is pretty cool!

Buzz Lightyear costumes are available in several sizes, for both kids and adults, and even an infant size for littlest ones.  The basic getup gets you a jumpsuit printed to look like the space suit of the character it is modeled on.  It has the iconic purple hood and shoulder cover, the chest plate with various buttons and insignias, as well as the green bands that break up the white lengths that make up most of the costume, which give that streamlined, futuristic feel.

The kids’ version is even better, because the chest plate is actually separate and attached onto the bodysuit via elastic straps, giving some depth and a more solid feel to the costume without sacrificing comfort.

For the complete costume, get the jetpack and gloves – vital components, and critical tools to the character!  Complete the look with some white boots (or just carefully attach the boot covers) and you are all suited up to go into infinity and beyond!  Imaginary space adventures galore await Buzz Lightyear, Space Ranger from the Intergalactic Alliance, Gamma Quadrant, Section 4!  Kids can even get the deluxe version, with light-up wings.  For that over-the-top, full-plus getup, add the green goggles!

Many of these costumes, with the exclusion of the light-up parts, are hand-washable or machine-washable, meaning you won’t need to go to the dry cleaners’ just to get the costumes ready for another round of fun.  This is a definite plus for parents whose kids like getting messy.

Of course, Buzz Lightyear is no stranger to team play, and he would certainly want to have his friends around.  For that Pixar-perfect party, get some friends to put on other character costumes from the Toy Story franchise.  There’s Sheriff Woody, the affable but slightly-old-fashioned pull-string sheriff.  There’s Mr. Potato Head – not a bad guy altogether but he’s got a few bits loose.  Of course, there’s Jessie the Yodeling Cowgirl from the second movie, a classic cowgirl costume with a twist.  There are many more characters, but they are not quite so suitable for costumery.
